On Monday 3 June 2013, all kids from OLA participating in a fun circuit sports event at school to promote health & fitness as part of National Recognistion Week.
We come together to recognise the 2 historic events in Australia’s history. 27 May marks the anniversary of Australia’s most successful referendum which saw over 90% of Australians vote to give the Commonwealth the power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and recognise them in the national census. On 3 June, 1992, the High Court of Australia delivered its landmark Mabo decision which legally recognised that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have special relationships to the land that existed prior to colonisation and still exists today. This recognition paved the way for land rights called Native Title.
We all know the importance of recognition and how good it makes us feel. National Reconciliation Week is the perfect opportunity to recognise all Australians, and the unique place of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples within this country.
To celebrate NRW, all OLA students participated in the fun ‘Fit Kids Have a Ball’ circuit. The kids had a fantastic time as the older classes completed the outdoor circuit around the oval & the play equipment while the younger kids were helped inside by the grade 5 & 6’s to complete the fun & challenging indoor circuit. The kids obtained sponsors whereby they could be sponsored by a small donation or be sponsored by donating a ball.
An unbelievable 214 balls were donated and $2363.95 was raised by the OLA community. Wow! The kids, teachers, parents and all sponsors should be extremely proud of themselves in raising so much money and equipment as this will make a huge difference to hundreds of kids lives who need a helping hand in remote areas of Australia.
All sporting balls collected will be distributed to remote schools and communities in the Arhnem Land and Katherine regions in the Northern Territory and 100% of all funds raised will be used for a number of projects to support the health, education and well-being of indigenous kids.
Thank you once again for OLA community and Leonie Young for supporting the foundation & special thanks to Stacey Linden for organising such a wonderful, colourful & enjoyable event.
